SPENCER “MAR” GUILBURT is an american artist, really famous for his unique style. Mar has painted in the entire world and have collaborated with many brands and shops.
What made you become an artist? Could you tell me more about your background?
My dad is a photographer so I grew up around a really creative environment. I think that probably influenced me to do something similar.
Basic question, but how did you choose your name?
I grew up getting yelled in Spanish by my Grandfather, and I also spent my whole childhood in the ocean surfing. So I chose ‘Mar’ which is ‘the Sea’ in Spanish. Plus I really like the way you could write the letter ‘M’
Could you tell us about your technique and the type of work you create?
The canvases are mostly done with acrylic and oil in the studio. My larger scale stuff like the murals are all done with spray paint. The technique is just whatever works best I guess.
How would you describe your work today?
Art that is done in a contemporary way using a medium usually associated with graffiti to achieve an image that transcends the traditional confines of graffiti. I want it to appeal to the Grandmother and her grandson who wouldn’t otherwise know about spray paint as a tool for creating real museum quality art. The focus is placed less on the medium and more on the final image as a whole.
What influenced you artistically?
Initially women and other people art
Which is the best wall you have ever painted?
I can’t choose one. They are all good in their own way. I really like the new one I just did in Miami. I think its good to try and keep growing artistically with each piece.
Any exciting projects coming up?
I’ve got a lot planned for next year. Larger scale works on canvas, metal sculptures and solo shows are all planned. It should be fun!
